The City of Johnson City will distribute free tree seedlings on April 4 in recognition of Arbor Day. The city has hosted the giveaway event annually since 2010, distributing 42,800 trees to community members to date.
According to a news release from the city, the event will take place at Metro-Kiwanis Park, 817 Guaranda Drive, from 9 a.m. until the supply of seedlings runs out. The city said it has a stock of approximately 3,100 tree seedlings to distribute.
Varieties include Trident Maple, Sioux (dark pink) Crape Myrtle, Paw Paw, Redbud, White Dogwood, American Hornbeam, and Willow Oak. A limited number of seedlings will be available per person, the city added.
According to the city, this year’s Arbor Day marks the 26th consecutive year that Johnson City has been named a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
“Maintaining the Tree City USA designation demonstrates Johnson City’s commitment to the many benefits trees provide to our community,” said City Forester Patrick Walding in the release.
To maintain that designation, the city said it must have an Arbor Day observance, a tree ordinance, a tree board or department responsible for trees and meet the minimum funding requirements for tree maintenance and planting.
